阿尔弗雷德·索恩—雷特尔（Alfred Sohn—Rethel）（1899—1990）。德国著名的国民经济学家和社会哲学家，曾任不莱梅大学教授。早年曾师从奥地利马克思主义学派经济学家勒德尔（Emil Lederer），于1928年在海德堡获得国民经济学博士学位。其哲学思想接近法兰克福学派，从20世纪20年代开始便与批判理论的代表人物阿多诺、霍克海默和本雅明等交往密切。二战期间流亡英国，曾为丘吉尔等人从事过经济分析，并长期与马克思主义者汤普森交往。雷特尔的哲学思想即在本书中系统阐述的唯物主义认识理论，曾在20世纪60年代的激进学生运动中产生重要影响。作者还著有《认识的社会学理论》、《商品形式与思维形式》等。
